Why do women have sex?

This is a question that strange enough I have never asked myself. What motivates a woman to have sex? I described before that sex is for women not exclusively a physical experience and that women should feel a sort of emotional closeness to a man to enjoy a sexual encounter. But research by Cindy Meston and David Buss described here at US News shows some surprising results.

The most important reasons for women to have sex is because they are sexually attracted to a man and for the physical pleasure. Reasons related to love and emotional bonding were surprisingly lower on the list. However, when Time magazine described the research results, they did mention that a women’s sexuality tends to be more linked with love and emotional bonding, and that women, more than men, like sex when there’s some kind of emotional connection.

Some other reasons to have sex were surprising or even sad. Some women had sex to get rid of a headache (it truly works, but don’t tell your husband or your migraine excuse will not work anymore), some women have sex to get revenge on partners who were not faithful (sad), some women had sex because they felt sorry for their mate (sadder), and some women had sex to land a job or promotion (even sadder), while others even had sex to get their partner take out the garbage (eh…).

The Daily Mail extracted some parts of the book, which were really interesting. The extracts describe what women find most attractive in men.

  • 80% of the women prefer a man who is 6 ft or taller, something which is confirmed by other studies. These found that taller-than-average men have a greater number of girlfriends and more children.
  • Women desire strong muscular men with a V-shaped torso, broad shoulders and a lean stomach (Who wants a beer belly? Yuk!)
  • Women find men with robust and square-jawed faces the most attractive sex partner. However, for a long term partner we prefer men with less masculine (read: more reliable) faces.
  • The same thing can be said about a man’s voice. Women prefer men with a deep voice at any time, but mostly when it comes to finding a prospect for a purely sexual encounter.
  • And when it comes to movement, women like men who display large sweeping movements. Latino dancers, for example, are found very sexy and attractive compared to a reeling Scotsman.
“Sex hasn’t been the same since women started enjoying it.

Now we can understand why women find Johnny Depp or Will Smith so attractive, or why women do not think that dancing and singing like Ricky Martin is for sissies. But what can you do as a man, when you do not have these physical features? You can make up with a good sense of humor. A sense of humor shows intelligence and confidence, two important traits in a man, not only for a short sexual relationship. Apparently women are more satisfied with their marriage if they think that their husband is witty (and if they take out the garbage unconditionally).

Financial struggles

Are you just like me wondering every month where your money went? At the end of every month I can see that we run a profitable business and made ourselves a decent income. Also, at the end of every month that same income is all gone. Where friends can afford holidays, nice cars and dinners [...]

Social Notworking? Not for me.

I often sit behind the computer thinking: “What should I blog about today?” or “Is there anything at all that I can Tweet about that might be interesting to a stranger?” I do not even want to discuss FaceBook, because I only signed up in the hope it would help my blog, but actually never [...]

Happiness Facts #1: Happiness is contagious.

Research shows that happiness is contagious. A smile attracts a smile. A happy person is likely to make someone else happy. Just as people are more likely to smoke when friends smoke, or get obese, when friends are obese, happiness also spreads like a virus. It does not only affect people in direct contact, but [...]

What about the father?

As I wrote in the article “The truth about motherhood”, is it very hard for mothers to do anything right. Choices are always criticized by one party or another. But this is not only about the caring and disciplining of small children. It goes on until far in adulthood. Children, other mothers and experts will [...]

How to overcome shyness

Being a confident and popular kid, I never expected to turn into a shy adult around my twenties. But it happened. I think the biggest turn was when I decided to move from my safe and familiar home in Europe to a new and adventurous life with my husband (then boyfriend) in SE Asia. Not [...]

The truth about motherhood

A couple of months ago, there was this Oprah show on The Truth About Motherhood. To all mums this must have been so recognizable, since it dealt with topics as sleep deprivation, competition between moms, body fluids and more. I liked the show very much, because I finally felt that I was not alone, not [...]
