Here is the last part my happiness series. We already discussed physical intelligence, creative intelligence, mental intelligence, emotional intelligence and spiritual intelligence, social intelligence, and individual intelligence.
I know it in my heart.
When you have reached this step of collective intelligence, you are ready to be a leader and to work for good causes, helping to make the world a better place. Share who you are.
Collective intelligence can be clearly seen in groups of social animals as ants or bees, but it is also obviously at work in ecosystems; the intelligence of nature. The term collective intelligence, or wisdom of the crowds, is becoming very popular in this millennium. It is not only used for ecosystems, but also what makes the social media so powerful. We are recognizing that with joined forces, and joined intelligences, we can come to better solutions and create a better world.
Collective intelligence is not the sum of collected individual intelligence. It takes another step to successfully develop collective intelligence from a group of intelligent people. When we look at issues in the world today, we hardly ever find personal fault or individual evil to be the cause of it. Looking closely at each and every individual, they have made the right decisions and done the right things from their perspectives.
Or an example in nature. Is human kind still part of natural selection of the strongest? Or are we able to defy nature and even keep the weakest alive? Is this why new diseases keep on developing? To keep the population down? It might not be in benefit of human population to find cures to all diseases, but as a person you always will try your utmost best to keep your relatives and close friends healthy and alive for as long as possible. When it comes to family members, nobody will care about the entire human race any more.
Craig Newmark
However, it needs to be said that wisdom of the crowds is based on a great number of people who all act in their own self interest. This is useful to keep economy running, to develop science and technology further, or even to keep Digg’s voting system or Google algorithm working. But to reach collective intelligence, you cannot set out to help yourself. You have to let your heart lead you instead of your ego and set out to help humanity.
This last step cannot be reached by a single person, but needs to be reached by a group large enough to make a difference in the world. All we can do as a person, it go back to step 4 and try to open our hearts, learn to trust our own intuition. I hope you enjoyed this series and that it did make some sense to you. Try to get at least halfway through these steps in your lifetime and be happy!

Hi Suzanne,
Just as the rest of posts in this series, you have captured the essence of the human spirit (at least the spirit that we all shoot for). This step is one that most don’t take. It’s almost as if we have two forces pulling at us from the opposite sides. One side is drawn to want more, more, more for yourself (the status, wealth, respect). And the other is drawn to reach out to others with whatever it is that you have to give. I suppose it’s a balancing act that mankind needs to practice.
Thanks for your insight.
