Happiness Facts #3: Three types of happiness.


Dr. Martin Seligman identified three kinds of happy lives:

  • A pleasant life: this involves having as much pleasure as you can. You can learn techniques to have more and longer pleasures and you can take shortcuts to pleasures like using drugs or go shopping.
  • An engaged life: this is about involvement and absorption in something like work, leisure or people. You are so focused on something that time passes quickly and all sense of self is lost. This usually happens when you do something you are good at and really love. You can only achieve this type of happiness by finding your strengths and build your life around it.
  • A meaningful life: This is not about pursuing pleasure, but about satisfying yourself with being meaningful and using your talents to serve something bigger than yourself. Engaging yourself in community service, charities , or politics and while using your strengths produces the belief that you live well.
